Once I arrived at the capital and got an inn room relatively close to the guild, I immediately stopped by the western district’s branch.

“Oh! So you’re the help they sent?”

Stan Jacka, the western branch’s manager, adjusted his glasses, moving them up and down as he looked between me and the letter I had brought.

“I’m Roland Argan. I have come from the Lahti branch.”

“Obviously I already know that. It’s written right here.” Stan patted the letter with his hand. “I’m not sure what a rookie can offer us, though.” The tired-looking man let out a rather drawn-out and dramatic sigh. He appeared to be in his midforties.

“I assure you I am capable of fulfilling my duties. Please tell me what you need.”

“Listen, bud, offices in the capital are nothing like those in the countryside. Understand? Just ’cause you can get the job down there doesn’t mean you’ll be successful here.”

“I don’t believe Lahti would be considered rural—”

“Compared to the capital, it is. We’re not running a training school here, so I don’t want to hear the words I don’t know, No one ever told me, I can’t do it, or any other possible iteration of those phrases.”

Stan glanced into the office. It was much larger than the Lahti one and had ten seats at the counter, which were all occupied by a staff member working with adventurers.

“Get going,” Stan instructed. “The adventurers never stop coming, so go help them. That’s your job.”

The man turned right around and headed to his office. Since I would be working with them for a while, I observed how everyone went about their tasks as I introduced myself to each staff member. They were busy, of course, so the greetings were perfunctory. Still, I was able to ascertain how things operated.

In addition to those adventurers being served, there were fifty others waiting on sofas in the back—and more lined up outside.

The staffers were all clearly on edge from how busy things were.

I organized documents that had been placed on the countertops and took a reception spot, bringing the number of adventurers the guild could serve at once up to eleven.

I didn’t need a chair.

Things ended quickly.

“Here, please! This way for reporting quest information! Quest reports here! Any adventurers with a quest to report, please make your way over!” I called out, earning some incredulous looks from my coworkers at first. Yet once they decided I wasn’t inconveniencing them, they returned to their duties without complaint.

Adventurers sitting on the sofas came over immediately.

“I have a Rock Bat slaying quest to report on.”

“I see. That’s a D-rank quest with a payout of two thousand rin per bat.”

“Yeah, that’s right.”

The Lahti branch offered the same job. There were some quests that were limited by region, but gathering and slaying quests tended to have wide-scale recruitments. They also required appraising, which took time.

“Thank you for your work. I’ll check these.”

There were twenty-four teeth in the jute bag the adventurer handed to me.

They all seemed to be from the monster, based on the shapes.
